- : : MAC literate = ? know how to turn multitasking on?
-
- : I'm guessing you mean PREEMPTIVE multitasking. Why, you turn it on the
- : same way turn on the Amiga OS's virtual memory. ;-) More seriously, the
- : only real option is to use some sort of Unix, and that's not much of an
- : option for most people.
-
- Think aux would have solve alot of my problem. shell, preemptive
- multitasking, memory protection, ... But it was like 300$ ? and I was
- not going to use the mac for that long anyway , and lots was unknowed
- about it, didn' had the time to found out, get it , install it. etc.
-
- : : learn how to mac the mac stop crashing (I'm sure it require lots of skill:)?
-
- : Remove extensions and control panals you don't need and don't run
- : buggy software. :-) The Mac OS itself is quite stable--the vast majority
- : of crashes are due to buggy programs bringing down the whole system.
- : (And when it comes to OS stability I don't think the AMiga has any more
- : protection from loopy programs than the Mac does. :-/ )
-
- Thats true.. but there is so many buggy program specialy when connecting
- to the net. The worse part is that my external drive would go dead after
- an OS crash. The only way I could get it back is with running disk doctor
- from the commercial package "norton utilities'.
- The amiga OS dont protect itself better from bad proggy, thats true.
-
- : : learn how to
- : : make a PPC make go fast and not make you wait for every IO?
-
- : Buy a 7500, 8500, or 9500. ;-) It depends on what you mean by IO--as
- : far as I know disk accesses keeping you from using the file system is the
- : only VERY big problem there. (network/modem/printer etc things are
- : usually fine, though I'm not denying the pre-Copland io system is in
- : serious need of work.)
-
- I remember printing make me look at the screen, disk IO make me stare
- at the screen... serial was ok, but netscape on the 7100 (I think was
- a 7100) with a 28.8 modem didn't seem as nice as on a sgi or pc.
-
- : : : I love computers. I bought my Mac entirely of my own free will--I
- : : : didn't need it for school or work. See? The very first test of your
-
- : : Ouch! :) Can you tell me why you love macs? and when did you get one?
-
- : Because the interface (IMO) kicks the snot out of Winblows, and none
- : of the other platforms had the kind of software availability I wanted. I
-
- I refused to use windows3.x or under... But I find windows95 GUI extremly
- good.(Aside the problem with autopopup window! I hate that!, but I
- experienced that on the mac too)
- The GUI I love the best is MUI, even so the 'window manager' on the amiga
- could be much better.
-
- And personaly I'm 99% interested in the HW/OS itself + dev tools and
- basic utilities.
-
- : also love all the odds and ends Apple comes out with, like standard Adobe
- : Type Manager (a software postscript rastorizer), scripting, QuickTime, etc.
-
- I didn't try any of those... aside quicktime.
-
- : I also have a lot more faith in Apple to adopt and create new
- : technologies than I do in Necro$oft.
-
- Copeland might fix alot of problem I see with the mac.. maybe then I
- will see a better view of it. So far I will go with win95/NT VS system7/aux
-
- : I have no real animosity towards the Amiga itself (some Amiga
- : *advocates* are another matter. ;-) BUT, the prices for comparable
- : hardware are insane, the software/hardware availability/support is almost
- : non-existant in the US, and it doesn't support so many of the things I
- : have grown so fond of. (drag and drop editing, excellent internet
- : support, etc.)
-
- Drag and drop editing?
- I think the amiga as good internet support...
-
- In most utilities I beleive you can find an exelent one avail for the
- amiga. file manager, text editor, shell, assembler ... Humm, thats
- mainly what I need :)
-
- : : My 030 amiga seem way faster then the powerPC mac I used... for IO and
-
- : The big factor there is usually responsiveness, and unfortunately
- : that's an area low-to-mid level Macs and PowerMac have never been
- : terribly good at. My 7500 is very responsive, but 6100 and 7100 models
- : can be almost agonizing to use, especially if loaded down with a lot of junk.
-
- I think I was on an 8meg 7100... I know for sure it was a PPC mac cause
- I runned PPC native version of software on it :)
-
- : : : (Cartoonish? Have you recently taken a
- : : : look at the feature set the Mac OS boasts? It's hardly a simple,
- : : : 'kiddish' OS.)
-
- : : I'm sorry, but little bubble showing something like "This little button
- : : is to close a window" gave me the above impression. Slow from the dayli
-
- : Ah, it took me a second to realize you meant "balloon help." Yep,
- : it's a cheezy feature. :-) Still, if well implimented it can be very
- : useful, and the newer Mac help system (Apple Guide) is rather impressive.
-
- MUI implemented it too... But its true it can be helpfull.
